The dry facts about dams

Article Abstract:

The Narmada valley dam projects in India, and the Three Gorges project in China may be the last major dam projects in these countries. The dams are supposed to provide irrigation and electicity, but flood control measures can mean that these benefits are lost, and power production is reduced when water is released to help fishing when there is a lack of rainfall. There is also concern about the social costs of such projects. The cost of building the Three Gorges project have also risen more than expected.

Off the rails

Article Abstract:

A high speed railroad is planned for Taiwan, and the project may rank first in build-operate-transfer projects world wide. Taiwanese banks are not convinced that lending for this project is an attractive idea. Taiwan's savings rate is some 25% of gross domestic product, banks have a great deal of liquidity, and there is high-level official backing for the project. Despite these factors, bankers are concerned that government proposals for the railroad project are not viable.
