The dynamics and effectiveness of international joint ventures

Article Abstract:

There is considerable debate about how to quantify the success of international joint ventures (IJVs). Termination of an IJV does not necessarily mean it has failed. Research on 272 IJVs shows that, in 83.8% of cases, IVJs were terminated when a parent company bought the IJV from the other partner. Selling equity to an outside company occurred in only 6.1% of cases. IJVs can be part of a company's strategic planning so that it can establish cross-border collaboration or take advantage of a new market.
