The equal opportunities policies of the EU and the competitiveness of UK companies
Article Abstract:
Equal opportunities policies in Europe tend to focus on gender rather than race and disability. The UK has sought to become exempt from such legislation but there is pressure for UK employers to conform from labor unions and some aspects of European Union (EU) legislation. The UK has a large proportion of part-time women employees and women's wages as a proportion of men's tend to be lower than elsewhere in Europe. Companies may feel deterred from employing women if they are forced to implement these directives, and due to not being able to employ cheaper labor, they may become less competitive.

Employee participation: the European Works Council Directive
Article Abstract:
The European Works Council Directive obliges companies with operations in more than one member state to create European Works Councils (EWCs) if requested to do so by 100 or more employees or their representatives. Voluntary agreements may be introduced before Sep 22, 1997, and failing this an EWC can be forced on a company if the required number of employees agree. EWCs will exist mainly to look at the company's general economic and financial position and at issues relating to employment conditions.

Foreign direct investment and employee relations
Article Abstract:
The impact of foreign direct investment on employee relations is considered. It is suggested that employee relations procedures in foreign-owned subsidiaries in the UK do not comply with UK standards. Furthermore, they are not direct replicas of those used in the firm's home country.
