The fighting in Afghanistan continues as differing factions of the mujahideen, which took over from the Communists in Apr 1992, battle for control of the capital. Saudi-backed fundamentalists refuse to take part in any sort of coalition until the Uzbek militia leaves the country.

Afghanistan's king in exile has called for an interim government in his country, leading to a UN-supervised general election. Zahir Shah, who refuses to return, claims that the election in Dec 1992 of Pres Burhanuddin Rabbani was corrupted by bribery.
