The 1997 baseball season is the 50th anniversary of Jackie Robinson's debut as the first African-American player to play in the major leagues in the 20th century. The anniversary is generating a lot of interest in Robinson and the old Negro leagues, to which blacks were once relegated.

Baseball clubs are paying a total of $800 million for player salaries this season, and they are feeling financial strains as profits have dropped 54% since 1989. Team owners are calling for salaries caps similar to the ones in the NBA.
