Mark Tully, a longtime BBC broadcast journalist based in India, sharply criticized director-general John Birt's management of the British television conglomerate in a Jul 13, 1993 address. Many of Tully's criticisms of BBC reforms enacted under Birt are unfounded.

Competition between Japanese banks is increasing, as a result of loose regulation of interest rates for deposits. Lower rates created a credit demand, and the competition that ensued resulted in the currently inflated property and stockmarket values.
