The heat is on

Article Abstract:

The planned sale by laser equipment maker Burnfield of its non-core businesses was undertaken with the help of Pinsent Curtis and Coopers & Lybrand. Auctioning was seen as the best way to divest the company's temperature and pressure division and was the result of a decision by Burnfield to focus on its core activities. The division, led by manager Paul Winters and four managing directors, was to be sold to a financial institution, probably 3i. Key issues, such as equity split, service contracts and the disclosure process, were discussed with the managers before the sale was completed.

Heat of the moment

Article Abstract:

Japan's new commercial buildings take into account the power needs and heat output of widely used computers, and the need to survive a Kobe-type earthquake. Businesses are now more diverse than in the 1980s, so central air-conditioning systems and the like no longer suffice, and large clients take a significant role in designing and remodeling their own offices. Apartment buildings that rest on rubber cylinders are suddenly popular, in part because they need less structural material to resist earthquakes.
