Shubert's 'Winterreise' a song cycle has been produced in a new way. While Hartmut Holl plays the music, the poems are read rather than sung, by the journalist Peter Hartling. Classical music promoters all too often resort to hyperbole in marketing performers, as the over-hyped concerts of David Helfgott illustrate. Composers are sometimes over-hyped, as well, but not British composer Simon Bainbridge, who deservingly won the 1997 Grawemeyer Award.

Air combat would be easier: women in modern music

Composing is one of few remaining fields where women are openly discriminated against and face an uphill struggle for recognition. A new composition by Nancy Van de Vate recently premiered at the Vienna summer festival and was received very enthusiastically.
