The inspector calls; Manila widens import-surveillance scheme

Article Abstract:

The Philippine government has authorized Societe Generale de Surveillance (SGS) of Switzerland to increase its surveillance inspections of imports. Products imported from Asean countries and other global origins will affected by this move. On the other hand, Indonesia is gradually removing its trade surveillance dependence on SGS by forming a local import inspection firm, the Surveyor Indonesia. SGS inspects all trade imports, assesses their values and recommends the proper tariff. The company also instructs local inspectors on how to detect imports that are misdeclared.

Cool handshake

Article Abstract:

The US liaison office in Hanoi, Vietnam, seeks primarily to elicit more information about missing US soldiers, postponing a further rapprochement between the two countries. A forthcoming Pentagon report is expected to list some 1,600 servicemen that it thinks Vietnam is withholding information on. While the liaison office will also register passports and issue work and travel visas, the US government plans no foreign commercial service in the near future. US congressional pressure may preclude further normalization.

Terms of engagement

Article Abstract:

Vietnam and the US are growing closer diplomatically as each needs the other to protect its interests in containing China. For the US, missing American soldiers seem to be the only remaining roadblock to normalized relations. The countries have already begun cooperating on narcotics control and law enforcement issues. Foreign aid from the US is not likely to start flowing to Vietnam unless some steps are taken to show the American people that Vietnam has done its best to find MIAs and release POWs.
