Article Abstract:

The UK government set up the Competition Commission to oversee policy on competition between businesses. Although the Commission has been given wider powers it has to have government approval for its decisions. The government decided to not follow the recommendations of the Commission which had suggested breaking up the Milk Marque in order to reduce the cost of dairy products. Whilst News International were castigated for lowering the price of their newspapers. The Commission is investigating the high cost of cars in the UK compared to the rest of the world.

Article Abstract:

Political risks are taken by Margaret Thatcher and Sir Geoffrey Howe with their budget and economic policies. Even if the strategy succeeds, the recovery may be too slow to win next election. The budget is unpopular with industry.
