The mystery and muddle surrounding East Timor
Article Abstract:
East Timor was invaded by Indonesia in 1975, then annexed and repressed. The Indonesian president, B.J. Habibie, has stated that the future of East Timor will be decided when the government has determined what its inhabitants want, though they will not be asked this question. There is concern that the government lack clarity in its approach to East Timor, and the inhabitants are worried about the ability of East Timor to survive with independence due to the weight of government spending in the economy.
