Article Abstract:

South Korean investment in US personal communications services licenses and entry into the cellular phone equipment market raise the stakes in the existing battles over the standards in use in Asia, the US and Europe. Because of European market dominance in the Global Systems Mobile standard, Korean firms are targeting equipment using the Code Division Multiple Access standard, which allows data transmission. South Korea backed US-based NextWave Personal Communications, which paid over $4.7 billion for licenses in recent auctions, raising foreign ownership of telecommunications concerns.
