The organiser of chaos

Article Abstract:

Psion has been extremely successful with its palm-top computers, and has experienced only two years of financial problems since it was created in 1981, according to founder David Potter. He believes that portable computing and data communications are closely connected, and feels that the market for a combined product will take off between 1998 and 2000. The company expects to be able to produce equipment with a screen as readable as a book page and with wireless communications by 2001. Potter is very proud that his company is market leader in its sector, and is keen to remain on the leading edge of technology.

The whole world in your palm

Article Abstract:

Latest personal organisers are capable of undertaking many different tasks and holding large volumes of information. They are not able to carry out large amounts of word processing, but are suitable for making notes, storing lists and maintaining a diary. The Apple Newton MessagePad is most suitable for those who do not wish to use a keyboard, but the use of a pen for data entry can be very slow. The Hewlett Packard OmniGo 100 offers both pen and keyboard input, while the Sharp ZR-5000 has pen control and jotting facilities.

Beefing up the thin clients

Article Abstract:

The introduction of the personal computer into the workplace has brought with it unforseen difficulties and expense of managing the networks that have developed as personal computers have been linked together. To reduce expenditure by a predicted 50%, new network computers will be introduced which would store information on a central computer. Other developments include the introduction of a new generic computer language and a foundational computer which is a reversion to a centralised computer system.
