The perils of home networking

Article Abstract:

A number of different approaches are being taken to the central control of household appliances. Computer and peripheral companies are mainly looking to establish PC-focused home networks, while consumer electronics concerns are concentrating on interconnecting home-entertainment equipment. A consortium including Sony and Philips is developing the Home Audio/Visual Interoperability system, and this has become the leading standard in the consumer electronics sector. In contrast, Microsoft is promoting a rival standard named Universal Plug and Play.

The perils of prediction

Article Abstract:

Some investment banks and academic economists believe that they have developed reliable ways to predict currency crashes. These models certainly seem able to predict past crises, but it is very uncertain whether they will be of any real use in predicting future crises. In general, these models tend to miss too many crises that have taken place or to predict too many that may never take place. Investors and traders should regard them as an additional tool, and should not overlook market judgment and country analysis.

Liberalism defined: the perils of complacency

Article Abstract:

The term 'liberal' means the opposite of conservative in the US. The word is seldom used in Europe anymore, but when it is, it is more closely associated with conservatism. True liberalism, which calls for freedom with reasonable limits, should be clearly defined and defended.
