Article Abstract:

President Alberto Fujimori may be elected for a third time in April 2000, though there are questions about the fairness of the election. Fujimori has become increasingly authoritarian. His achievements include control of inflation, economic reforms, the building of schools, roads and clinics in poorer areas, and tackling Peru's guerrilla problem. The economy went through a difficult period in 1999, but is reviving. Fujimori has challenged the constitution to be allowed a third term, and has a powerful political machine to back him.

Article Abstract:

Alberto Fujimori wants to be president of Peru for a third term, but he has not won the first round of voting for a new president. There is concern that the first round was not fair, and Aleandro Toledo has a second chance in the second round. There are risks involved in Fujimori's seeking a third consecutive term.
