The red bourgeoisie
Article Abstract:
It is becoming more common for ordinary Chinese to be able to afford consumer goods which were until recently regarded as luxuries, such as colour televisions and refrigerators. Foreign brands are now beginning to establish a strong presence in China, but companies looking to establish a presence there should be aware that they are not necessarily guaranteed a large market. Chinese manufacturers will inevitably begin to place more emphasis on quality and service, especially as fewer subsidies are made available.

War and peace
Article Abstract:
The Vietnam War ended in the political reunification of that country but created internal divisions that remain and still bring pain to this day. Despite the failure of most of its non-military ventures, the northern leadership remains distrustful of outsiders, especially South Vietnamese. As it celebrates the 20th anniversary of the war's end, and while seeking greater ties to the US, the govt and its press ignore the patriots of the south who fought on both sides.

Of Habibie, Hanson
Article Abstract:
Indonesian President B.J. Habibie must find ways of addressing the challenge of rebuilding the confidence of the ethnic Chinese, according to Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer. It is not yet clear whether the steps Habibie has taken so far are sufficient to rebuild confidence. Downer believes that Pauline Hanson's One Nation Party does have some backing in Australia, but feels that the vast majority of Australians do not support it.
