The return of Ozawa

Article Abstract:

Japan's Liberal Party, led by Ichiro Ozawa, plans an alliance with the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), which is in power. The Liberal Party has lost supporters as well as the financial backing of the Buddhist organization, the Soka Gakkai. Prime minister, Keizo Obuchi, has pledged that the LDP will refrain from challenging incumbents from the Liberals in an election, though there may not be full support from the LDP for such an agreement. The LDP lacks a majority in the upper house, and an alliance with the Liberals would help in passing legislation.
