The setting sun

Article Abstract:

Most Japanese believe that the economy is in recession because economic growth is falling far short of expected growth. The Japanese economy has been plagued in 1992 by flat demand, declining asset prices and low industrial output. Although economists still expect a modest growth in the gross national product of up to 1.5% by the fiscal year ending in Mar 1993, this is less than half of the 3.5% government estimate. In addition, employment cuts and reductions in forms of capital expenditure occur almost daily. The Japanese government is trying to remedy the situation by setting up a 10.7 trillion yen ($86.1 billion) recovery package.

Bad boy makes good: Tokyo Steel thrives by being different

Article Abstract:

A company profile of Tokyo Steel is presented. It is shown that the company's gross and net margins are substantially higher than any other steel maker in the world. This success is traced to the company's very high labor productivity and its nimble character in an industry known for its conservatism, as it works outside the producer supplier networks that dominate the steel industry. At present, Tokyo Steel is trying to beat out hot-coil imports by utilizing a familiar price-leading strategy.

Wedding undersold: Japanese firms are not cashing in on the royals

Article Abstract:

Japanese retailers have made relatively little marketing use of Crown Prince Naruhito's wedding to Masako Owada on Jun 9, 1993. The efforts of the Imperial Household Agency to prevent over-commercialization combined with fears of right-wing backlash to limit the wedding's economic impact. Moreover, the activities of the imperial family are no longer of prime interest to Japanese consumers.
