New Prime Minister of Thailand Banharn Silpa-archa has announced his cabinet to widespread disappointment, though it does not include two particularly notorious members of his Chart Thai party. The seven-party coalition government is comprised largely of veteran politicians, though key members include Thaksin Shinawatra, overseeing efforts to fix Bangkok's traffic problems, and lawyer Surakiart Sathirathai, who to the concern of many will be finance minister, managing the country's complex financial liberalization.

A whole new face: a revamped Thai Farmers Bank grabs top slot

Article Abstract:

Thai Farmers Bank debuted on Far Eastern Economic Review's third annual REVIEW 200 survey of leading Thai corporations at the No 1 position, reflecting an extensive effort to restructure the bank and position it for competition from overseas banks. Charoean Pokphand, bumped one spot down to No 2, still won kudos for its long-term vision and was the company others most sought to emulate. Hotelier Dusit Thani ranked first in quality of service or product, and in innovation to meet customer needs.

The vision thing

Article Abstract:

C.P. Group, the largest conglomerate in Thailand's telecommunications sector, was the highest ranked company in 1996. It has managed to achieve strong growth in spite of the slow-down of the Thai economy, and has been undertaking further diversification. It is the largest individual foreign investor in China, where it has 130 joint ventures and is present in all provinces except two. Other leading Thai corporations are discussed.
