The state of US-Swiss affairs

Article Abstract:

The Nazi gold deposited in Swiss bank accounts was the topic of a forum organized by the American Women's Club of Zurich on Jun 9, 1998. The issue has created tension between US-Swiss relations since it was first brought up in the fall of 1996. Since that time, the support given by the Swiss people to the stance taken by their government on the subject has eroded. They believe that no matter how much Switzerland spends in compensating Holocaust victims, it would still not be enough. Swiss banks have already spent 240 million Swiss francs in settling the claims of Holocaust survivors.

New chip on the block

Article Abstract:

Snack food manufacturer Frito-Lay opened an operating and service center in Berne, , to become the headquarters of its Europe/Africa/Middle East operations. Operating and Service Center Human Resources VP JP Staf Wouters believes that Berne, Switzerland is an ideal site for the company's new office because of its central location, good quality of life and the availability of good infrastructure. In addition, building an office in this Swiss City will permit the company to be near Continental Europe that is believed to be the region that will step-up Frito-Lay's growth.

Extending helping hands

Article Abstract:

The American Women's Clubs (AWC) in Switzerland are actively involved in charity work. Since 1949 when the first AWC was set up, individual chapters of the AWC have been raising funds for deserving charities. AWC Berne, for example, began its charity work by raising funds for polio victims while the larger AWC Geneva has held an annual Thrift Shop campaign to raise funds for homes for unwed mothers and for drug addiction intervention groups. Other AWC chapters in Basel, Lausanne and Zurich have raised funds for worthy causes through gala dinners and cookbook sales.
