The thirty-years campaign
Article Abstract:
Colin St John Wilson is the architect of the new British Library. The design has been subject to criticism and the project has taken thirty years to be realised. Wilson, however maintains a detatched, ironic attitude to the public debate and advocates that critics wait to experience the completed building. Wilson was professor of architecture at Cambridge University and has recently published a book on the history of his subject. He criticises post modernist amd high-tech styles, preferring a balance of function, beauty and technology as exemplified by 'The English Free School.'

Responding to the demands of educational change
Article Abstract:
Architects commissioned to plan a new design centre for Rugby School had to create a flexible building which complemented the older adjoining structures. The design centre has to accommodate many diverse activities from a television studio to ceramics and textiles workshops. The building has large rooms and flexible services so internal rearrangement is possible. The building is in a restricted site and on uneven levels which have been used to provide rooms with differing heights.

Medieval ruin becomes modern concert hall
Article Abstract:
The ruined Guesten Hall of Leiston Abbey, Sufflok, England has been restored as a concert hall and refectory for the Pro Corda Trust. The medieval building was restored with an emphasis on detail, and quality of craft work by architect, Michael Mallinson. Originally intended to be living accomodation, Pro Corda decided the hall should reflect its medieval use and serve as a small concert hall. The acoustics were designed by Arup acoustics and can be altered by means of curtains.
