Article Abstract:

The European Union (EU) plans to increase its membership to include copuntries from eastern Europe and elsewhere, six of which have already been involved in advanced negotiations. They include Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Cyprus. A number of issues have to be tackled, such as the size of the European Commission, the weighting of the voting system, and whether majority voting should become more common. There is also a debate on flexibility that will be tackled in 2000.

The fado factor

Article Abstract:

Portugal is holding the European Union (EU) presidency, and has the task of setting the agenda. Issues that have to be tackled by Portugal include the planned enlargement of the EU, and a constitutional conference to change the founding treaties of the EU. The EU also plans a common defense capability, which is another issue that Portugal must tackle. Portugal also plans a summit to deal with a range of issues such as social policy, employment policy and information technology.
