The uphill struggle for Karrimor

Article Abstract:

Outdoor clothing maker Karrimor was founded in the UK in 1946, since when it has grown to achieve sales of 10 million pounds sterling a year in the 1990s. In order to raise acquisition funds, chairman Mike Parsons, son of the founders, sold a 25% stake to investment company Gartmore, to help buy leading tentmaker and skiwear manufacturer Phoenix Mountaineering, and cycle hardware distributor Life Cycle. The enlarged group made a loss in 1996, forcing the company to negotiate a funding package with 21 Group. It is hoped that the new partnership will revive the company's fortunes.
