The urge to splurge: Thai banks expand rapidly abroad

Article Abstract:

Most Thai banks are speedily expanding their operations abroad. Bangkok Bank Ltd, which is one of the largest Thai banks, is filling gaps in its wide network from Indonesia to Japan and has set up branches in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam, as well as in Shantou, China. Both Krung Thai Bank Ltd and Thai Military Bank Ltd are expanding operations in Burma, Laos, China and Vietnam although neither has substantial experience of overseas operations. A number of other Thai banks have also set up joint ventures or branches overseas. Analysts, however, feel that Thai banks will find it difficult to compete in foreign markets.

Thought for food: Thai farm policy faces long-term choices

Article Abstract:

Thai agriculture faces major changes. Thailand, Asia's first and the world's ninth largest food exporter, must deal with an array of problems including declining prices, lack of water for irrigation and the move toward free trade in Asia. Thailand can address these problems either by single-mindedly pursuing industrialization as have its East Asian neighbors or by seeking to become a food-exporting agro-industrialized country like France. In addition, Thailand's chicken conglomerate Charoen Pokphand is pressing the government to defend the country's first-place ranking as an exporter of fowl in Asia.
