The versatile organisation: achieving centuries of sustainable growth

Article Abstract:

Management thinking has been dominated by the image of an organisation structure as a pyramid, during the past century. This has resulted in functional, hierarchical, line management structures, although they can be inflexible and unresponsive to change. Four old organisations are analysed, and a different view of organisations as three-dimensional models of the operational process, is proposed. It is also proposed that an organisation should be seen from a clear philosophical perspective, as democratic, comprising independent units linked by a common set of values.
