The vulnerability of an architect
Article Abstract:
Many architects find it hard to fulfill their career ambitions, especially as the profession comes under increasing attack from social planners, philosophers and politicians. One important problem is that architects themselves do not fully understand the nature of their work, according to Robert Gutman, a researcher who mainly works in the US. The profession is full of myths about what architects actually do, especially in regard to the amount of time which architects actually spend on 'design' work.

Desperately seeking 'head-up' architects
Article Abstract:
Many architects produce extremely detailed plans when seeking work on a new project, but often fail to take a wider view and consider the context of the scheme. They ignore the physical environment in which the building is going to be placed, and do not consider issues such as funding and client politics. Few make submissions which are really easy for the potential client to understand.

Art of the matter
Article Abstract:
Crispin Kelly dismisses public art as contrived and prescribed. A defence of public art is presented believing its condemnation to be less about place making rationale and more a sentimental fear of cultural change.
