The wisdom of Salomon

Article Abstract:

Salomon Smith Barney (SSB) is acquiring the investment banking operations of Schroder for $2.2 billion, a deal that emphasises the dominanceof large, gloabl, US banks. SSB is part of Citigroup, while Schroders was the biggest quoted British-owned investment bank. Schroders is retaining asset management activities. Neither bank could compete effectively in the European investment bank industry, due to their small size, so the merger helps to remedy this.
