Thermal and structural mass

Article Abstract:

Designers are increasingly using fabric thermal storage to reduce cooling loads in buildings but there is often confusion as to the link between physical mass and thermal mass. Some relatively lightweight structures such as composite steel/concrete can provide high thermal mass levels. Research by Oxford Brookes School of Architecture, the Building Services Research and Information Association and the Steel Construction institute compared the thermal performance of different structures.

Designs on the past

Article Abstract:

Architects designing a project near or on an archaeological site often face major difficulties. It is often difficult to ascertain if the work will be delayed leading to increased costs and possibly problems with planners. Before starting on a design a good point of reference is the Sites and Monuments Record which keeps records of archaeological sites in the UK. Assessing the risks of building such sites is extremely important.
