Article Abstract:

Japanese companies have found that many problems can hamper investment in China. The promise of China's gigantic market for goods and services, the rising yen and the Japanese recession helped to make Japan the fourth largest investor in China. However, these investors have encountered many difficulties including China's dual-currency system, the lack of qualified employees, the lack of freedom for incentive systems, political instability and the imposition of risky contractual and operational practices.

Allied scrutiny

Article Abstract:

Hong Kong's Allied Group Ltd led by Lee Ming Tee has become the object of investigation by the colony's authorities on the basis of allegations of illegal transactions. The investigation has been ordered by the Securities and Futures Commission and is to last six months. The activity is expected to temporarily put a halter on the company's expansion plans. Its present holdings include a security service, steel firm and the Philippines Plaza Hotel.

Hong Kong tycoon Li Ka-shing, in a meeting with top executives of his Hutchison Whampoa conglomerate, voiced dissatisfaction at the growing costs of the company's Hutchison Telecommunications Ltd subsidiary. He will either shut down or sell the unit's operations in Southeast Asia, Australia and Europe, leaving its Hong Kong operations which have provided 95% of its profits, and refocus on his businesses in Hong Kong and China.
