Thought those days had gone
Article Abstract:
The trial of John King, accused of the murder of a disabled African American, James Byrd, is taking place in Jasper, Texas. The prosecution argues that racism was the reason for the murder. Some whites in Jasper claim that the crime was not related to race, and many do not wish to talk about the trial. The defense lawyers may argue that a drug deal was involved. Some blacks in Jasper see the death of Byrd as related to racism which they experience every day. The killing has reopened wounds leading to racial distrust in Jasper.

A tragedy and a shame
Article Abstract:
A judicial inquiry has been published into a racist killing in London, England, which has been critical of the actions of the police, and which makes several recommendations. These include the recruitment of more Asian and black police officers, and extending the Race Relations Act, 1976, to public bodies such as the police. There are a total of 70 recommendations, which also cover the investigation of racist crimes. The government is keen to improve the relationship between minority groups and the police.

The gun commandments
Article Abstract:
The US House of Representatives is opposed to gun control and has refused to consider a proposal for checks on buyers at the 4,000 gun shows held annually. Private citizens hold 192 million firearms in the US. Majority whip, Tom DeLay, argues that creationism is the answer to violence in the US. Congress could propose the posting of a set of commandments on school walls to encourage children to love their guns and gun culture, with target practice on Sundays and the like.
