Japan's economic success since World War II has been called a 'miracle.' It is better understood if its policies towards savings and investment and inflation control are recognized as two the priorities that helped to supply much-needed capital and advance economic growth.

The once and future boom

Article Abstract:

Short-term pessimism about Japan's economy is based on faulty beliefs that a tax increase will hamper consumption and that nonperforming loans will bankrupt financial institutions. The historic factors behind economic pessimism in Japan are discussed.

While most economic indicators in Japan continue to show an economy in dire trouble, other signs point to its gradual reemergence. While the US is calling for Japan to reduce its trade surplus it should be patient and wait for its economy to rebound.
