Far right parties garnered surprisingly high shares of the vote in Germany's Apr 1992 state elections. The Republican party polled 10.9% in the Baden-Wurttemberg election, up from 1% in 1988. The anti-immigrant German People's Union finished third in Schleswig-Holstein with 6.3% of the vote.

The local elections in Hamburg, the second largest city in Germany, are causing national concern. Politicians such as Chancellor Helmut Kohl are getting involved in the campaign for the Sep 21, 1997 election. Results of the election could foreshadow future national election results.
