Tories out: council elections

The Conservative Party lost heavily in the recent county council elections in England and Wales, andy now control only one council, in Buckinghamshire. Labour also lost, but the Liberal Democrats seem to have benefited from a middle-class revolt against the Tories.

By-election data compiled by David Cowling on the relative popularity of the UK's three major parties suggests that Labour's strong showing in the polls is not reflected at the ballot box. The Liberal Democrats' percentage of the vote appears to be rising.
