Toy chip king strikes again: from Tamagotchis to Furbuys to Meow-Chis, it's Sunplus inside
Article Abstract:
The Taiwan-based Sunplus Technology Co., a designer of computer chips, has been able to survive and grow while other chipmakers have been hurt by the slowdown in personal computer sales by carving a niche for itself in low-market chips, such as found in toys, calculators and digital cameras, and bringing new products to market faster. Also, the company times its exit so that it does ends up with relatively minimal amounts of excess inventory. Sunplus expects profits to rise 57% to NT$1.98 billion (US$60 million) for 2000, versus 1999, and will rise about 30% in 2001.

On the first day after each reported their results, Taiwan Semiconductor's shares rose 4.6% to close at NT$91 (US$2.77), while Hon Hai's closed unchanged at NT$193. Foreign investors' concern about transparency is discussed in the context of each company's performance and management.
