U.S. is overestimating trade deficits with China, business group maintains

Article Abstract:

A recent report released by the US China Business Council claimed that Dept. of Commerce figures on the US trade deficit with China are overstated by 50%. The report stated that the Commerce Dept.'s estimates are inaccurate because they do not allow for certain statistical distortions brought about by the passage of this trade through Hong Kong. The agency is scheduled to come out with a report placing the deficit at $34.9 billion.

The Clinton administration is taking credit for reducing the trade deficit with Japan from $47.2 billion in 1994 to $46.8 billion in late 1995.
