Treacherous shoals

Article Abstract:

Six Asian countries are vying for possession of the Spratly and Paracel island groups in the South China Sea. Military forces from five of these countries, China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia and Taiwan, are stationed in the islands that have been claimed by these countries as part of their territory. The sixth country, Brunei, has no military forces stationed in the area. Asian countries feel threatened by China's expansionist policy and the possible return of US military forces to enforce security within the region has not been discounted.

Vietnam opening

Article Abstract:

The growing economic relations between Vietnam and Hong Kong will likely become stronger after an agreement was reached on the forced return of over 50,000 boat people. Improved relations will benefit the growth of trade and investment from Hong Kong into Vietnam with companies in the colony filling in where multinationals are reluctant to invest due to Vietnam's lack of clear land title regulations. Hong Kong is now Vietnam's top foreign investor and is fast becoming the country's gateway for Asian and American businessmen.

Reluctant spectators

Article Abstract:

The US embargo on Vietnam greatly limited US companies' efforts to take advantage of Vietnam's oil prospects and resurgent economy. US companies believe that the trade sanctions hurt US business more than it does Vietnam. Steps were taken to normalize relations with Vietnam but until the trade sanction is totally lifted, US corporations would have to be content watching from the sidelines.
