'Triple-whammied'City
Article Abstract:
In 1993 the City of London was experiencing extra traffic problems, due to the IRA bomb and other factors. The City of London has unique planning problems, being a business centre with few residents and an international financial hub. Areas outside the central Square Mile business district may well contain more shops, restaurants and homes than in the centre. This change is coming about due to the over-supply of office space in London rather than public demand for more facilities. There are also moves afoot to divert traffic away from the centre and encourage pedestrians.

Prophet of co-ordination
Article Abstract:
Transport in London now needs an integrated policy according to those working on future developments. Changes began with the introduction of travelcards and zone fares, and are likely to continue with journeys being charged for different rates using a 'smart card.' Bus stops may soon have indicators showing which buses are coming and how long passengers can expect to wait. Bus services and new Tube lines will be further developed to discourage car travel.

Lots in difficulty
Article Abstract:
In the early 1990's the UK government gave funding to promote the use of empty spaces above shops as homes. Funding increased from zero in 1990-91 to 12 million pounds sterling in 1992-93. In early 1993 196 local government areas had suitable properties, but only 30 had both properties and the government funding to set the scheme up. The funding and the properties need to be in the same geographical area to allow the project to succeed.
