Troubled waters in Boracay

The travel industry is trying to help Boracay, the Philippines recover its reputation as a safe haven for tourists after an initial report stated the island's waters are unsafe for swimming due to high levels of coliform. The coliform levels on the island have gone down to 1,000 MPN per 100 ml and is well within the guidelines set by the United Nations. The region now boasts sanitation facilities to keep coliform levels down but skeptics warn that a rise in the number of tourists could send levels rising again.

Malaysia: up in smoke?

Various tourist services for Malaysia and Indonesia are aggressively trying to remain in business as the smog caused by forest fires have prospective clients looking for other vacation spots. They are complaining that clients are shying away from Indonesian and Malaysian vacation spots and are calling for government intervention in the form of information services for tourists.

Latest unrest in Cambodia deals a new blow to tourism industry

Article Abstract:

The bombing in Cambodia in late Mar 1997 may hurt its blooming tourism industry, which reported an increase of 19% in foreign visitors to 260,489 in 1996 over the previous year, as potential clients may avoid going to the country. The bombing, alleged to be an assassination attempt against a prominent dissident, killed 16 people and injured 118 others.
