Article Abstract:
The German Christian Democrats and chancellor Helmut Kohl are losing support of the media, and this includes the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, which has previously not criticized the party. The paper has previously seen the Christian Democrats as preferable to alternatives, but has changed this view since Gerhard Schroder was chosen to lead the Social Democrats. Die Welt and Bild have also become less supportive of the government. Helmut Kohl is friends with Leo Kirch, whose private TV channel, SAT 1 has previously helped Kohl, but SAT 1 may not provide so much support in the 1998 elections.

Ashcroft v Murdoch
Article Abstract:
The treasurer of the United Kingdom Conservative Party, Michael Ashcroft, is taking legal action against the Times newspaper, arguing that it is involved in a conspiracy to damage his reputation. There have been rumors relating to Ashcroft's business activities, but there is little evidence against him. Ashcroft's principal business service firm, Carlisle Holdings, has seen a drop in value following the publication of the allegations. The Conservative Party was affected by sleaze allegations in the 1997 elections, so the allegations against Ashcroft are unwelcome.

The war divides
Article Abstract:
The German coalition government agrees with action by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization against Yugoslav president, Slobodan Milosevic, and there is support from the general public. The action is opposed by the Party of Democratic Socialism (PDS), and this means that a coalition involving the PDS and Social Democrats is unlikely. The Greens are divided on the issue, and the Green foreign minister, Joschka Fisher, is seeking a peace plan, and cooperation from Russia to allow Milosevic to back down.
