Two Foundations, Telefonica to buy stake in PCCW

Telefonica S.A. of Spain and two charitable funds owned by businessman Li Ka-shing are to buy a 23 percent stake in PCCW Ltd. of Hong Kong a telecommunications service provider. Telefonica S.A. is to purchase an eight percent stake and the charitable foundations are to purchase a 12 percent stake.

First-half profit is damped by loss at undersea venture

PCCW Ltd. posted a HK$703 million (82.8 million euros) net profit for the 2003 first half. However, the company was affected by a loss at its undersea cable business.
