There has been overinvestment in motion picture theaters in the US. Megaplexes were initially seen as a good investment, but as building moved away from prime sites, and more of them were set up, they became less profitable. There have also been too few movies to fill megaplexes. Motion picture theater chains have increased their debt levels, and there is a need for the problem of overcapacity to be tackled if the industry is to recover. Similar problems could appear in Europe.
