Presidential overflight could rattle relations with Japan
Article Abstract:
US Pres Bill Clinton's decision not to make a stopover in Japan during his visit to China may endanger US-Japanese relations. Numerous Japanese deem Clinton's decision to forgo Japan as the result of Chinese pressure, and a signal that the US no longer fully value the US-Japan partnership. Though better US-Sino relations will undoubtedly profit the world, it would be an immense mistake for the US to underrate the role that the US-Japan alliance plays in sustaining both the economic and strategic stability in Asia.

Tragedy shouldn't drive U.S. from Okinawa
Article Abstract:
The US presence in Okinawa has a stabilizing effect in the areas of economics and security. Thus, the rape by three US servicemen of an Okinawan girl is despicable enough and should be condemned but it should not unduly prejudice relations between the US and Japan to the extent of endangering the naval pact of the two countries which serves the interest of both and the rest of Asia.
