Mario Monti is considered somewhat tough and exacting in his decisions regarding large mergers with global implications. He has held the post in the European Commission for only one year but he has a reputation. He is an economist and a university professor by training and brings those skills to this job. WorldCom plans to appeal Mr. Monti's blockage of its merger with Sprint.

Telia, Telenor get go ahead for merger

European Commision has approved merger of Norway's telecommunications provider Telenor ASA and Sweden's Telia AB. As condition for approval of the merger, Telenor and Telia have agreed to open up their local telephone networks, divest their mobile telephone businesses and other telecommunications services as well as cable television systems.
