U.S. slowdown will be tough test for a fragile recovery

Article Abstract:

U.S. economic growth during the first half of 2000, reaching rates of 6% for the second quarter, has ultimately resulted in Asian surpluses. Although some companies such as United Microelectronics Corp. have reduced capacity, business executives forecast an American economic slowdown to have limited impact on Asian economic conditions. Lower American interest rates, a weaker U.S. dollar, and lower outsourcing costs are cited as factors limiting the Asian impact of an American economic slowdown.

Asian growth will be hit by September attacks

Article Abstract:

The terrorist attacks on the U.S. in September 2001 are expected to affect Asia's economic growth, which will force the region to count on its domestic markets more. Those areas that have strong domestic economies and do not rely as much on American business are expected to fare much better in the post-attack era.
