U.S. threatens sanctions on EU: modified-crop bans in France, elsewhere increase tensions
Article Abstract:
The US announced it will impose trade sanctions on the European Union unless member nations reverse their bans on genetically modified crops. The threat was prompted by a missed deadline by Austria to lift the ban it had imposed on MON810, an animal-feed corn made by Monsanto Co., and the French government's announcement that it too will ban the corn. MON810 is the only genetically engineered crop approved by the EU.
