Unfree, unfair
Article Abstract:
The two main rivals of the ruling Cambodian People's Party have alleged that the result of the recent election, which will allow party leader Hun Sen to remain in power, is not legitimate. International observers approved the electoral process, but others claim that voters were intimidated and that votes were not counted correctly. There is great concern in Cambodia that the speed with which international observers approved the election has allowed Hun Sen to strengthen his hold on power.

After Pol Pot, who?
Article Abstract:
Speculation is rife on who will become leader of the Khmer Rouge when Pol Pot dies. No clear candidate has emerged. Possibilities include Nuon Chea, deputy supreme commander of the Khmer Rouge army and Ta Mok, who currently commands most of the army. However, both men are in their seventies. There is a group of seven commanders forming a second tier and a third tier of younger intellectuals that could produce a leader.

Hostile climate: government clips wings of fledgling democracy
Article Abstract:
Cambodia's first democratically elected government is starting to look less like a democracy. The government has stepped up censorship efforts, used the judiciary for political gain and taken extreme measures against opposition leaders. The UN and foreign nations have yet to admit that the Cambodian democratization was anything but a success, but evidence suggests otherwise.
