The China National Tourism Administration and Civil Aviation Administration are at the forefront of efforts to educate China's population on the importance of tourism to benefit their country's economic development. These agencies have initiated the 'Visit China '97' program, which distributes information and education materials that promote hospitality to tourists. China attracted 51.1 foreign tourists in 1996, generating revenues amounting to $10.2 bil, while domestic tourism attracted 639 mil visitors for an income of $19.76 bil.

Failing to excite

Article Abstract:

The Philippine centennial celebrations may largely fail in its efforts to lure tourists due to the government's decision to tighten marketing budgets. The Philippines is fighting hard to boost tourism in 1998 but the economic crisis has forced it to scrimp on marketing budgets. The tourism budget has been slashed, airlines have cancelled flights, preparations are yet incomplete and hotel rates remain high.
