Unleashing the tiger: market forces are driving the Asian nations toward open economies and free trade

Article Abstract:

Changes within the Asia-Pacific market have been the prime movers toward greater economic liberalization and free trade. Countries within the region have become more hard-pressed to compete for capital investments from the US and Japanese. Moreover, they have begun to experience strong pressures to enhance technology and address key economic issues such as labor migration and skilled labor shortages. In support of these changes, the US should strive to provide adequate supports for Asian products to allow them to compete effectively against subsidized products from Japan and Europe.

Japan and U.S. should act as supportive anchors to APEC

Article Abstract:

The success and prosperity of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) depend largely on the cooperation of the US and Japan. This is designed to assure APEC's smaller members that the free trade goal will not put them at a disadvantage.
