Unlimited suffering: Lloyd's

Many of Lloyd's names, or insurance agents and those who provide capital, have suffered huge losses in recent years. Names were once part of the monied establishment in the UK, but that changed in the 1980s. Several UK luxury industries have been affected.

The UK government is under pressure to devise a public-private insurance system for commercial buildings worth more than 500, 000 pounds. Neither the private sector nor the government seem to want to assume the risk of Irish Republican Army terror.

Sweeping up Lloyd's messes

Lloyd's management is proposing a new way of doing business in the wake of billions of dollars of forecast losses for 1991 and 1992. The insurer is proposing training for agents, a peer review process, better cost containment and other measures.
