Ukraine has inherited an army and arsenal from the old Soviet Union that was made disproportionately large during the Cold War. The promised downsizing of conventional and nuclear forces and their army, which will lead to inevitable unemployment problems, are being closely watched by the West.

There are many different armies and police forces in South Africa, many with different loyalties. There is South Africa's main army, an army for each of the homelands, several guerrilla forces and armed police units.
